Cross Island Farms Opens New Roadside Greenhouse
Cross Island Farms announces the opening of a new, roadside self-service greenhouse offering certified organic vegetable plants at 44301 Cross Island Road, Wellesley Island.
Co-owners David Belding and Dani Baker collaborate on the vegetable plant production. David hand-mixes 8 natural ingredients including his proprietary vegan compost to produce the potting mix. Dani plants the seeds and nurtures the seedlings indoors under lights until they are ready to transplant for sale into individual pots, 4-packs, and 6-packs.
A large variety of vegetable plants are available including hierlooms and popular hybrids. Cold-hardy
cabbages, kohlrabi, kale, head lettuce, chard, chives and parsley can be planted outdoors now. More tender tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant need protection until all danger of frost is past. Dani states she has 15 varieties of tomatoes including pink, yellow, red and black slicing and paste types. Hot, sweet and bell peppers total 14 kinds. Four varieties of eggplant round out the mix. For the more adventuresome gardener, she even has tomatillos.
Cross Island Farms’ new greenhouse is open 24 hours daily. You can help yourself, or call on Dave and Dani to assist with your choices. During your visit they would be happy to show you their vegetable gardens and their 11 new naturally raised piglets which can be reserved now by half or whole for fall delivery. Dani and Dave invite you to visit their website, www.crossislandfarms.com for more information about the farm and it’s offerings. They can be contacted by phone at 315-482-FOOD (482-3663).
